Victoria and Frederick for President
By Jonathan Davidson
Directed by Charles Randolph-Wright

Create Carolina presented the world premiere of “Victoria and Frederick for President”: Before there was a Hillary there was Victoria, and before there was an Obama there was Douglass. A little know fact in American History is that in 1872 Victoria Woodhull, the first female stockbroker, ran for president and nominated Fredrick Douglass, a former slave, as her vice presidential nominee.

Inspired by the current political climate, Create Carolina used our unique collaborative process to write a new innovative theater piece about the untold story of Victoria Woodhull and Frederick Douglass. Our writer in residence collaborated with Winthrop University students to create a piece which examined the parallels between the political processes of then and now by using a format that combines multimedia and theatre.

Staged Readings

Discretion
Written by local playwright Terry Roueche
Directed by guest artist Paul Whitty

God's Man In Texas
Written by David Rambo
Directed by guest artist Martin Rader

Wits, egos and ideologies are set on a collision course when renowned preacher Jerry Mears "auditions" for the top job in the Baptist universe. But the aging pastor of the biggest, best-known and most closely watched Baptist church ever won't easily give up his dynasty - or the televised 10 o'clock service - in this drama about institutional power struggles, fathers and sons, and religion in the age of mass marketing.

Dance Performance

Final Showcase

Dance works consisted of faculty and student choreographed dance pieces created during the Create Carolina Arts Festival.

Film Screenings

Trainwreck: My Life as an Idiot
Written by Tod Williams

Trainwreck: My Life As An Idiot, an adaptation of Jeff Nichols' memoir directed and written by Tod Harrison Williams. Actor Seann William Scott, 29, is playing the title role of Jeff... the idiot. Here's a quick synopsis... "Paralyzed by learning disabilities, recovering alcoholic Jeff Nichols is trying his darndest to figure who he is and how he's supposed to live his life... and nothing seems to be working." Gretchen Mol and Jeff Garlin also co-star in this film, which was an official selection of the Hampton, and Seattle international Film festivals.

A Man Named Pearl

A Man Named Pearl tells the inspiring story of self-taught topiary artist Pearl Fryar. It is a subtle and intriguing film that is certain to open hearts and minds. It offers an upbeat message that speaks to respect for both self and others, and shows what one person can achieve when he allows himself to share the full expression of his humanity.
