MAYMESTER COURSE INFORMATION


THRT 397 Advanced Arts as Social Commentary: Students work daily with professional scriptwriters and actors to co-create an original play focused on the political process leading to the selection of the President of the United States. Students will also be engaged in the creation and performance of their own original works and will receive hands-on experience with industry professionals. This is an intensive festival intended for the most serious of student professionals in training for careers in theatre, TV and film.

THRT 397 Advanced Arts as Social Commentary/Dance Component: Students work daily with professional choreographers from around the country and be engaged in the creation and performance of their own original works and will receive hands-on experience with industry professionals.



Past THRT 397 activties have included:

  • Daily classes that combine playwriting, movement, acting, voice, and music;
  • Development of student creative projects supervised and guided by faculty;
  • Production work on the scheduled performances;
  • Performances of student works (developed in classes),
  • Performances of an original work by Jonathan Davidson and current Winthrop students “Victoria and Frederick for President” directed by Charles Randolph-Wright. This commissioned play will include a cast of professional actors and students selected from the class;
  • A staged reading of “God’s Man in Texas” by David Rambo, which will include professional actors and students selected from the class. • A staged reading of “Indiscretion” by local playwright Terry Rouche, with a lecture by writer Terry Rouche following the performance. • Film screening of “A Man Named Pearl” with a “Meet the Artist” before the film.
  • Film screening of “Trainwreck: My Life as an Idiot” with a lecture by director and writer Tod Williams.



What do I need to do to register?

(Registration is currently closed)

  • Current Winthrop students
    * If you are a current Winthrop University student, you may register for Create Carolina classes by logging into Wingspan and registering online.

  • Non-Winthrop students
    * If you are not a current Winthrop student your registration will be completed manually.

    * Non-winthrop students should complete the following application form and the residency form.
